One Good Turns Deserves Another ....
An Igbo Man Pays A Debt To A Carpenter Who Helped Him At The University 20 Years Ago

Onyebuchi Emenanka, who is a graduate of Abia State University, ABSU, paid a 20-year-old debt to a carpenter who helped him 20-years ago while he was still in school.

Today, I decided to put a big smile on someone’s face. When the ABSU event was over and on my way back, I did a stop over at the place where I used to live as a student on Agiriga Street Okigwe.

My mission was simple – to pay a surprise visit to my old neighbors, who are mostly local carpenters and petty traders.

I moved into that area sometime in 1998 and lived there till 2001 when I graduated. My brother Chiemezie Nwakanma was living there then and helped me secure the room. We were next door neighbors. Iyke Aaron and Chizuru Kanu later joined us there.

There is this particular carpenter who was so kind to me then. He would do my carpentry works free of charge and will lend me money whenever I was broke. I didn’t pay back most of those monies. The Mbano man was just nice to me and treated me like his own son.

The man has a penchant for speaking high sounding grammar and we named him the Professor of Carpentology, a title he cherishes so much… Heheheheheheheh.

17 years after, I stormed the place today and it was a big party. I ensured that there were drinks of different kinds and food to go round. All the carpenters stopped work to welcome their old neighbor. The women were not left out.

I told them stories of how that carpenter assisted me greatly and without seeking any pay back from me. I thanked all of them for the kindness and love they showed me then. They were all amazed that I could still remember all of that almost 20 years after.

The carpenter had a set of male triplets while I lived there. They are all grown now and one them works with him in his shop. He said the boy is brilliant but he has no money to train him in school. He lost his wife a few years ago.

There and then, I announced that I will send him to the university and bear the cost of his training. The man broke down in tears. I told him that his son should get a better life than he had. I am fully committed to keeping that promise. I shall help secure admission for him and see him through school. Who knows? He may be the channel through which God will liberate the family from the vicious cycle of poverty and deprivation.

It was a great day today as we drank and relived old times. I ensured that each of them got some small cash in their pockets.

Before I took my leave, they all asked me to kneel down while they said some prayers that touched my soul.

I felt a deep sense of fulfilment today. Yes…

Good one here.

True Life Story Of A Man Who Survived Without Eating For 382 Days.(More Than A Year)

Fasting for over a year sounds like the stuff of legends and many actually consider it an urban legend, but an old medical journal offers scientific proof that there once was a man who didn’t eat anything for 382 days and lived to tell the tale.

A case study published in the 1973 edition of the Postgraduate Medical Journal documents the unbelievable story of a 27-year-old “grossly obese” Scottish man who stopped eating for a total of 382 days in a desperate attempt to lose weight. He not only survived the extreme challenge, but remained in good health and managed to go from 456 to 180 pounds (81 kilograms from 206 kilograms). According to doctors at the University of Dundee School of Medicine, the man’s weight remained stable at 196 pound (88 kilograms) five years after undergoing the unusually long fast.
“Several years ago a grossly obese young man presented himself for treatment. Initially there was no intention of making his fast a protracted one, but since he adapted so well and was eager to reach his ‘ideal’ weight, his fast was continued into what is presently the longest recorded fast (Guinness Book of Records, 1971),” doctors wrote at the time the case was published.
The man didn’t eat any solid food, instead surviving on the energy from his abundant fat deposit as well as potassium, sodium, and yeast supplements, which are considered essential for biological functions inside the body. Because of this, his bowel movements were infrequent (to say the least), with doctors writing that evacuations only occurred every 37 to 48 days.

To keep his health in check throughout the duration of the fast, the patient, named Angus Barberi, visited the hospital frequently to have his blood and urine tested. Doctors used the results of these tests to introduce supplements and correct any deficiencies. As surprising as this sounds, the plan actually worked, and Barberi remained in good health.

“Despite the hypoglycemia – low blood sugar – the patient remained symptom-free, felt well and walked about normally,” the case report states.
So how was something like this possible? Well, in 2012, Australian science personality

Dr. Karl Kruszelnick explained the case in a long post post on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s science website. Essentially, he claims Angus was able to survive on his stored fat, which acted as fuel for his body.

“After two or three days of fasting … the majority of your energy comes from breaking down fat,” Kruszelnick wrote. “The fat molecules break down into two separate chemicals — glycerol (which can be converted into glucose) and free fatty acids (which can be converted into other chemicals called ketones). Your body, including your brain, can run on this glucose and ketones until you finally run out of fat.”
According to a Chicago Tribune report, by the time Angus Barberi finally had a proper meal after his 382-day fast, he had forgotten the taste of food. He ate a boiled egg with a slice of bread and butter, and told reporters “I thoroughly enjoyed my egg and I feel very full”.
As amazing as this story may seem, it’s worth pointing out that such extreme fasting is not recommended. Snopes reports that prolonged fasting was very popular during the 60’s and 70’s, but eventually fell out of favor with dieters after numerous medical reports of complications and even fatalities. Nowadays, long fasts are only recommended as part of doctor-supervised treatments and only when patients meet certain medical criteria.

US President, Trump said on June 8 that he's thinking of pardoning the late boxer Muhammad Ali, and that it's his "absolute right" to pardon himself.

Continuing to draw on his clemency powers, President Trump said Friday that he may soon pardon Muhammad Ali — a sentiment that a lawyer for the late boxer quickly said was appreciated but unnecessary.

Ali was convicted in 1967 for refusing to report for induction into the United States military during the Vietnam War. His local draft board rejected his application for conscientious objector classification.

“He was, look, he was not very popular then, certainly his memory is popular now,” Trump told reporters as he prepared to leave the White House on Friday en route to a Group of Seven economic summit in Canada.

Trump said he was thinking “very seriously” about pardoning Ali as well as other “folks that have some sentences that aren’t fair.”

But Ron Tweel, an attorney for Ali, who died in 2016, pointed out that the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Ali’s conviction in 1971. In a unanimous ruling, the court found that the Department of Justice had improperly told the draft board that Ali’s stance was not motivated by his Muslim religious beliefs.

Muhammad Ali at a news conference in 1972. (UPI)
“We appreciate President Trump’s sentiment, but a pardon is unnecessary,” Tweel said in a statement. “There is no conviction from which a pardon is needed.”

That notion was echoed by Walter Dellinger, a professor at Duke University School of Law and an acting solicitor general during the Clinton administration.

“There is nothing to pardon!” Dellinger wrote on Twitter.

Trump’s musing about an Ali pardon was blasted by the Rev. Al Sharpton, who accused the president of “nothing more than grandstanding.”

Besides criticizing Trump for offering something unnecessary, Sharpton said Trump’s past “anti-Muslim and Islamophobic policies and rhetoric” were an affront to Ali’s religion.

“You can’t stand up for Islam while simultaneously denigrating it,” Sharpton said.

Trump has used his clemency powers to pardon or commute sentences in a string of high-profile cases recently. Those have included the late Jack Johnson, the first black heavyweight boxing champ, whose posthumous pardon was championed by actor Sylvester Stallone, among others.

US president told reporters Friday that his administration is “looking at literally thousands of names of people that have come to our attention that have been treated unfairly or where their sentence is not near.”

He also said that he is open to hearing recommendations from NFL players and other athletes, arguing it was a better outlet for their concerns about racial injustice than taking a knee when the national anthem is played.

“I’m going to ask them to recommend to me people that were unfairly treated, friends of theirs or people that they know about, and I’m going to take a look at those applications,” Trump said. “And if I find and my committee finds that they’re unfairly treated, then we will pardon them or at least let them out.” lastweek

A pardon does not technically erase a conviction; it is an expression of forgiveness from the president that, in most cases, serves to undo the punishment and help the recipient of the pardon restore rights, such as the right to vote.

A posthumous pardon — as would be the case with Ali — is completely symbolic. While a pardon is typically not meant to imply innocence, that is perhaps the signal Trump is trying to send.

Last week, Trump told reporters he is considering pardoning lifestyle maven Martha Stewart, who was convicted in 2004 of obstructing justice and lying to investigators about a well-timed stock sale, and commuting the sentence of former Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich (D), who was convicted in 2010 of trying to sell the Senate seat vacated by President Barack Obama, among other campaign finance violations.

[Trump fixates on pardons]

Those who have already received pardons from Trump include Joe Arpaio, the former sheriff of Maricopa County, Ariz., who was held in criminal contempt for ignoring a court order related to the detention of people suspected

BREAKING: Obasanjo raises alarm, accuses Buhari of plotting his arrest on false charges

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has accused the Buhari administration of plotting to slam false charges on him, to pave the way for his indefinite detention.

The former leader said the government was planning to use fake documents and witnesses against him.

Mr Obasanjo said this in a statement by his media aide, Kehinde Akinyemi, on Friday.

The claim is the latest twist after weeks of bitter exchanges between the two leaders, who fell apart after Mr Obasanjo accused Mr Buhari or ineptitude and corruption, and advised him not to seek reelection.

Mr Buhari responded recently by accusing his predecessor of frittering away $16 billion on phoney electricity projects. Mr Obasanjo hit back at the “ignorant” claim.

Speaking via his aide on Friday, the former president said plans to silence him were in two fold, among which is a plot to cause the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to reopen investigation into the activities of his administration.

He said the Buhari administration had also perfected a plan to use fake documents and witnesses against him. He said this will be a re-enactment of the Abacha era in which he ( Obasanjo) was detained on trumped up charges.

The presidency could not be immediately reached for comments.

The former president said he had been told that his name was on the government’s “watch list”, and that the security of his life cannot be guaranteed.

He however said no amount of campaign of calumny, no matter how well contrived, orchestrated or marketed would deter him from speaking out.

“Since Chief Olusegun Obasanjo declared in his State-of-the-Nation Special Statement on January 23, 2018, the desperation to frustrate, intimidate and blackmail him into abandoning his divine mandate to protect the rights of the people to better life and living continued unabated and has even taken a bizarre dimension,” the statement said.

The statement said the first option to silence him was to seize his international passport and clamp him into detention indefinitely, in order to prevent him from further expressing angst on the “pervasive mediocrity in the quality of governance, economic management and in the protection of lives and property by the Government”.

Part of statement is below:

‘Impeccable security sources have alleged Chief Obasanjo’s name is on their Watch List and that the security of his life cannot be guaranteed. According to these informants, many of who are in the top echelon of the Nation’s security management and close to the corridors of power, the operatives are daily perfecting how to curtail the personal liberties of the former President and hang a crime on him’.

‘Ordinarily, we would not have dignified these reports with a response but for the fact that many of these informants are not known for flippant and frivolous talks. Secondly, this Government has demonstrably exhibited apathy, and in some cases, encouraged by its conduct, daily loss of lives and property in many States of the country, the office cannot be indifferent.

“We are currently in a nation where the Number Three citizen is currently being harangued and the Number Four citizen is facing similar threat within the same Government they serve. There is a groundswell of our nationals that live in fear that they could be hounded, harassed, maimed or even killed as the battle for 2019 takes this worrisome dimension.

“For Chief Obasanjo, this is a joke carried too far and being someone who do not act on unofficial information, he had cautioned all informants and adopted a wait-and-see attitude to the bestial propositions allegedly being contemplated to cow, cage and embarrass him.

“The content of the alleged beastly designs, it was learnt are two-fold for now. One, to seize his International Passport and clamp him into detention indefinitely, in order to prevent him from further expressing angst on the pervasive mediocrity in the quality of governance, economic management and in the protection of lives and prope

Lionel Messi Poses with Goats While Saying He's Not the G.O.A.T.

This is interesting ... Lionel Messi  posing with a live goat for a photo shoot -- while explaining that he doesn't consider himself the greatest soccer player alive.

"I don't consider myself the best," Messi tells Paper... "I think I am just another player."

Yeah, right.

As Paper points out, Messi has one of the most impressive resumes in pro sports.

"He has helped his team, FC Barcelona, win 32 trophies -- including nine Spanish Liga titles and four in the Champions League. He led the Argentine national team to the gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and brought them victory at the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in 2005."

He's also got 5 Ballon d'Or awards, 5 Golden Shoes and holds the Guinness World Record for the most goals officially scored in a season (50 in the 2011-12 La Liga season).

But sure ... just a regular player.

"On the field, we are all the same when the game begins," Messi adds.

Messi also talked about everything from his upbringing in Argentina to his charity work with UNICEF in the full PAPER x Sports article.

No word on who had to clean up after the goats.

Pastor narrates how motorists refused to help accident victims, instead took photos as the family of 5 lay dying

A resident pastor at Dominion City, Onitsha:

“KILLER HERDSMEN ARE JUST LIKE MANY NIGERIANS”

I hardly make posts.I think apart from my wife’s birthday,I have just made one but I need to do this because I am traumatised by it.
This morning,I was rushing to catch up with my sunday service at Benin from Osha.Having been forced to sleep at Onitsha due to head bridge traffic jam last night.
Just after Abudu, the Honda pilot in my distant front pulled a back tire and the Suv began to sumersult. This car went up to about 20 feet above the ground before landing with its roof. This wasn’t a Rabo or James bond movie but a reality.I was so petrified.Never seen that in my life.
**When it was all over in just seconds or so,lying on the floor were a family of 5 children with there parents traveling after christmas.
**Thier father was nearly gone, mother and 4 children heavily wounded and unconcious, one daughter not touched but shouting and shaking her parents and siblings to come back alive.
**Road blocked many packed and we all started praying and calling God of life.(Nigerians can sure pray).
**I now said we need to move them to hospital.I carried the 4 injured unconciuos children into my Suv,trew all my suits and loads out to accomodate their only concious sister and told the young pastor with me to drive them to hospital.
**This is when I saw Nigerians in action. No one agreed to bring his/her car for the 2 unconscious parents.
I begged, cried, knelt on the main road, nobody. Yet more than 50 different type cars were there.

**Many snapping pictures of the people posting.

**I tried blackmail,deaf ear.

**I became crazy and beat on vehicles yet nobody bulged.
**While this was going on the father gave up the ghost.

“HEARDSMEN ARE JUST ANOTHER NIGERIANS”

**When this happened,I thought hearts will change, but none, rather more tears without action.

**I saw a govt toyota landcruiser with a pilot hilux and knelt in front of it with my suit asking the man to use his hilux but he ordered his police orderly to push me out. Guess what other hypocrites who refused for the past 40mins started insulting him for committing same offence.

**The mother was now going, yet nobody.I told my pastor to rush back and lets carry these ones.

**Just then road safety came to my help. Well by this time the woman was near gone.

**We got to the hospital and the kids are being treated but doctors said more time wasting would have killed them especially the 2 boys. Thank God.

**please help me pray for them.

**The road safety said it is only one out of one million people that help accident victim in Nigeria.

**please let us change that this year.

**It could be your family tommorrow.

**I came back from hospital to take these pictures of the car but not human beings.

Open Letter To Judge In Kanu's Case

Editor’s note: Justice John Tsoho yesterday, January 20, ordered the Radio Biafra director Nnamdi Kanu to be remanded in the custody of the Nigeria Prison Service, Kuje, pending his trial for treason.

Absurd case which has done harm to the image of Nigeria

His lordship, I must commend your bravery to have finally chosen to preside over this absurd case which has done more harm than good to the image of Nigeria. Had the executive respected the previous decisions of courts of jurisdiction, you would not be here now but it is good that you are here because somebody must restore the confidence and prove the independence of the judiciary.

Buhari has tried to undermine the credibility of your institution

The DSS and federal government led by Buhari had flouted the orders of court of competent jurisdiction, they have shown contempt and it is shameful they approached you yet for justice. Buhari has tried to undermine the credibility of your institution; he in his maiden media chat cited his willingness to control the judiciary which will destroy democracy and human right entrenchment you symbolizes.
I can understand and see the pressure from Buhari to influence your lordship to be partial, he even said he would jail judges he perceived to be corrupt, by virtue of serving justice where he understood to be injustice, I know you fear he would come after you but you have to be strong and explain explicitly to him. The universal UN 2007 declaration on the rights of indigenous people which gave a people right to ask for self-governance protected Nnamdi Kanu, the decision of Nigeria to domesticate this law and was signatory to it further backed Kanu.

Nnamdi Kanu registered IPOB in line with UN recommendation

Bringing treasonable felony charge to your lordship is like executive fraud (419) to the 2007 signatory and domestication and without her signatory and domestication; Nnamdi Kanu i know will never agitate for Biafra, asking Buhari to give him Biafra is in line. His lordship, Nnamdi Kanu registered IPOB in line with UN recommendation, Kanu is a certified leader of IPOB by virtue of world convention of indigenous people in Los Angelos in 2015 and bringing a feeling of unlawful organization is borne out of impulse to destroy.

The judiciary of this country feared to be puppet

His lordship, I spoke with a British friend and a Spanish friend who expressed dismay that despite seeing how Scotland and Cataluna handle agitation for freedom, Nigeria preferred to be barbaric and unlawful, instead of debate and dialogue, they chose incarceration, torture and killing. My friend wondered why you gave the prosecution such time but I am of the belief that the law accepts all but justice. The reason for the court is to correct the abnormality nursed by the prosecution and I have confidence. Your lordship, the eyes of the world is upon you and the judiciary of this country feared to be puppet in the hand of the executive is due to be cleared and proved wrong.
